Chapter 5
Lyra's Intuition
Young Lyra, initially wary of Elara, reveals her unique ability to sense the forest's distress. Together, they investigate the early signs of the illness, forging an unlikely bond built on shared concern.
Lyra moved through the dappled light with the silent grace of a woodland creature, her bare feet barely disturbing the moss-laden earth. Elara watched her from a respectful distance, a knot of apprehension tightening in her chest. The girl’s initial wariness had been palpable, a tangible barrier erected between them, a mirror of Elara’s own deep-seated caution. Elara, despite her cynicism, found herself drawn to this notion, a faint echo of a belief she’d long since buried beneath layers of pragmatism.
“The sickness is stronger today,” Lyra said, her voice barely a whisper, yet it carried with a surprising clarity. She stopped by a gnarled oak, its bark a tapestry of lichens and shadows, and ran a hand over its rough surface. Her brow furrowed, a subtle tension rippling through her small frame. “It feels… like a cold hand squeezing its heart.”
