The crackle of the dying fire was a familiar lullaby, a stark contrast to the silent roar of the city that had once been Elara’s life. She traced the rim of her crude wooden mug, the warmth seeping into her calloused fingers. The scent of pine and damp earth had become more potent, more real, than any perfume she’d ever worn. Yet, tonight, a different aroma, sharp and metallic, pricked at her senses – the scent of a world she had fought so hard to leave behind.
It had arrived with the morning mist, a small, tightly rolled scroll delivered by a messenger bird with an unnervingly intelligent glint in its eye. Not one of the community’s own, this creature. Its feathers were too sleek, its bearing too accustomed to the hands of men. The scroll itself was of fine parchment, a material unheard of in this hidden enclave, bearing the embossed seal of a law firm whose name echoed with the sterile clang of a courtroom.
Kaelen had observed her as she’d unfurled it, his gaze steady, discerning. He’d said nothing, his silence a patient question. Lyra, perched on a moss-covered log nearby, had watched with a mixture of apprehension and fierce curiosity. The community, usually so open, had felt a subtle tension ripple through them. The messenger had been a disruption, a harbinger of something alien.
