The air in Elara’s small living room had grown thick, not with dust motes dancing in the afternoon sun, but with an unspoken tension that pressed in on her from all sides. Leo sat opposite her, his presence a vibrant splash of colour against the muted tones of her life. He hadn’t moved from the armchair since she’d finally, after a moment that stretched into an eternity, invited him in. The initial shock of his appearance – that shock of recognition that had sent a tremor through her very bones – had subsided, replaced by a gnawing unease, a familiar guest that had taken up permanent residence in her chest.
She traced the rim of her teacup, the porcelain cool beneath her fingertips. The tea had long gone cold, a forgotten casualty of the sudden storm that had erupted within her. “You… you shouldn’t be here, Leo,” she managed, her voice a thin thread, barely audible above the thrumming in her ears.
He leaned forward, his gaze steady, those startling blue eyes holding hers with an intensity that made her feel both seen and exposed. “And yet, here I am, Elara.” His voice was a low rumble, a melody that her heart, against all rational thought, seemed to remember. “Did you truly think I wouldn’t find you? After all this time?”
