Seeking answers, the twins encounter Grumble, a shifty merchant peddling peculiar trinkets. His riddles and cryptic advice offer a sliver of hope, alongside a hefty price.
The forest floor was a carpet of damp, decaying leaves, each one whispering secrets as we tiptoed through. Lyra, bless her perpetually optimistic heart, was humming a jaunty tune that sounded suspiciously like a battle hymn, while I was busy trying not to trip over my own two feet. Our quest, if you could call it that, was to find someone, anyone, who knew what in Eldoria’s name our particular brand of magic was. Elder Borin, after our rather explosive (and frankly, embarrassing) attempt to defend the village from a flock of particularly peckish gronk-birds, had grumbled something about "frivolous nonsense" and "wasting good daylight." Which, coming from a man who spent most of his days staring at his beard, was high praise indeed.
“Are you sure this is the right way, Elara?” Lyra asked, her voice a little too loud for the hushed woods. She nudged a particularly bulbous mushroom with the toe of her boot. “It smells… fungal.”
“The map Elder Borin reluctantly shoved into my hand said ‘follow the Whispering Stream until the Gnarled Oak, then bear left towards the Glimmering Caves’,” I recited, tracing the faded ink with a grubby finger. “And this, my dear sister, is most definitely a stream. And it is, I believe, whispering. If you listen very, *very* closely, it sounds like it’s complaining about the water quality.”
