The air in the attic was thick with the dust of decades, a fine, powdery film that settled on everything like a shroud. Kristijana, armed with a worn leather-bound notebook and a pencil, felt a familiar surge of purpose. This was where the real work began, where the raw material of her past lay waiting to be cataloged, analyzed, and ultimately, understood. Each box, stacked precariously high, was a unit of measurement, a variable in the grand equation of her life. Today’s objective: the chaotic expanse of the attic, a veritable matrix of forgotten moments.

She opened the first box with a decisive click of the latch. Inside, brittle newspapers yellowed with age, their headlines screaming of events long past. She noted the date, the prominent articles, the advertisements for products that no longer existed. It was all data, grist for the mill of her intellect. But then, beneath a layer of moth-eaten blankets, her fingers brushed against something smooth and cool. She pulled it out, a small, tarnished silver frame.

And there she was. A girl, no older than seven, with a gap-toothed grin and eyes that sparkled with an untamed joy. Beside her stood a woman, her mother, her smile radiant, her arm a protective circle around the child. They were on a beach, the ocean a blur of sapphire behind them. The photograph was faded, the colors muted by time, but the emotion, the raw, unadulterated happiness, vibrated through the image. Kristijana traced the outline of her younger self, a stranger and yet intimately familiar. This was before. Before the silence. Before the questions. Before the calculations that had become her refuge.
