The house sighed around Kristijana, a gentle exhalation of dust motes dancing in the slivers of afternoon sun. It had always been a place of quietude, but now, after years of absence, its silence felt amplified, a vast, echoing chamber where her own thoughts bounced back with unnerving clarity. She stood in the study, the air thick with the scent of aging paper and forgotten ink. Bookshelves, crammed with volumes on mathematics, philosophy, and theology, lined the walls like silent sentinels. This was her father’s domain, and hers, a place where logic reigned supreme, where every problem had a solution, every variable could be accounted for. But the formula for her own heart, that remained stubbornly elusive.

She ran a finger along the spine of a worn copy of Euclid’s *Elements*, the familiar weight a comfort. Here, in the ordered universe of geometry, everything made sense. Lines met at precise angles, figures possessed defined properties, and theorems, once proven, stood immutable. It was a stark contrast to the chaotic, fluid nature of her own feelings, a landscape she had spent a lifetime trying to map with the same unwavering precision. The trigonometry of the soul, she had once mused, a grand, ambitious project to quantify the immeasurable. But the angles were proving more obtuse, the arcs more erratic than any diagram could capture.

A faint scent of lavender, her mother’s signature fragrance, drifted from a half-open drawer in the oak desk. Kristijana’s breath hitched. She hadn’t opened this drawer in years, not since… not since the day she’d packed her bags and left, carrying with her a wound that had never quite healed. Her father had always encouraged her analytical mind, her father had always praised her ability to dissect problems with cold, hard logic. But her mother, her mother had understood the language of the heart, the subtle nuances of emotion that defied calculation.
