Anya traced the rim of her teacup, the ceramic cool against her fingertips. Across the worn oak table, Maria watched her, her brow furrowed with a gentle concern that Anya had come to cherish. The comfortable silence that usually settled between them, a testament to years of shared laughter and quiet understanding, felt different today, taut with unspoken things.

"You've been quiet, Anya," Maria said softly, her voice a warm murmur like a cat's purr. She pushed a plate of still-warm almond cookies a little closer to Anya. "More than usual. Is everything alright?"

Anya’s gaze drifted to the window, to the familiar, comforting sight of her small garden, now touched with the mellow hues of approaching autumn. The roses were still bravely blooming, defiant splashes of crimson against the fading green. It was a garden that had always felt like a sanctuary, a place where the world’s clamor receded, and her spirit could breathe. But lately, even its peace felt fragile, a thin veneer over a growing disquiet.
