Chapter 15
The Cracks in the Foundation
Anya witnesses further instances of hypocrisy or inflexibility within her community, reinforcing her belief that a more authentic faith is possible, even if it means standing apart.
The air in the community hall, usually thick with the scent of old hymnals and the faint perfume of ladies’ scarves, felt suffocatingly still. Anya sat near the back, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. Elder Thomas’s voice, a familiar rumble that once soothed her soul, now grated on her nerves. He was speaking about tithing, about the importance of contributions, his words laced with an undercurrent that felt less like spiritual guidance and more like a subtle coercion. Anya watched as Mrs. Gable, her face etched with worry lines, fumbled with her purse, her contributions always a little less than what was expected, a little less than what was deemed ‘worthy’. Anya knew Mrs. Gable’s husband had lost his job weeks ago, a fact Elder Thomas, in his pronouncements from the pulpit, seemed to conveniently overlook.
Across from her, Maria’s gaze flickered towards Anya, a silent question in her eyes. Anya offered a small, tight smile, but Maria’s brow furrowed slightly. Later, as the meeting dispersed, Anya found herself lingering, the need to escape the stifling atmosphere urgent. She saw Elder Thomas engaging in a hushed, animated conversation with Mr. Henderson, a man whose business dealings were rumored to be less than scrupulous. Their laughter, when it rang out, was hearty and self-satisfied, a stark contrast to the somber pronouncements about financial stewardship he had just delivered. A cold knot tightened in Anya’s stomach. It wasn't just the insistence on giving, it was the selective application of principles, the veneer of piety that seemed to mask a more worldly ambition.
