A Lonely Thief
Lily confronts the sea otter. He tearfully admits he took the pearl because he was lonely and wanted attention, not to cause harm. He didn't realize its importance.
Lily’s heart pounded a rhythm against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat echoing the churn of the sea outside the otter’s cozy, seaweed-lined den. Before her, perched on a smooth, sea-worn rock, sat the creature who had caused such an uproar, the thief of the mermaid princess’s most precious treasure. He was smaller than she’d imagined, his fur a rich, dark brown, slicked with seawater, and his whiskers twitched nervously. He clutched the shimmering pearl in his paws, its radiant glow illuminating the small space, casting dancing shadows on the sandy floor.
“So,” Lily began, her voice surprisingly steady, though a tremor of nerves still ran through it. “You’re the one who took the mermaid’s pearl.”
The otter flinched, his bright, dark eyes darting from Lily to the pearl, then back again. He hugged the pearl tighter, as if it were a shield. “I… I didn’t know it was hers,” he stammered, his voice a reedy squeak, far different from the confident chatter Lily had half-expected from a mischievous thief. “It was just… so pretty. It glowed like a trapped moonbeam.”
