The air in the dusty chamber hung thick with the scent of aged parchment and forgotten secrets. Sunlight, fractured through a grime-streaked window, painted shifting patterns on the floor, illuminating motes of dust that danced like tiny, spectral performers. Ahmad, his princely bearing momentarily softened by a boyish earnestness, leaned closer to the ancient scroll Layla had unearthed from a hidden alcove. It was brittle, its ink faded to the color of dried blood, but the words, painstakingly deciphered by Layla’s sharp eyes, spoke of a sorrow that predated even the oldest tales of the Sultanate.
“It says here,” Layla traced a line with a delicate finger, her brow furrowed in concentration, “that the locket was not forged in joy, but in desperation. A craftsman, betrayed by a nobleman who stole his designs and his livelihood, poured his grief into the very metal.”
Ahmad nodded, a growing unease settling in his chest. This was far from the simple tale of a stolen treasure he had imagined. “So, the curse… it’s not a spell cast by a sorcerer?”
