The Price of Truth
The air in the abandoned warehouse was thick with the scent of dust and something metallic, like old blood or forgotten machinery. Elara hugged herself, the chill seeping through her thin jacket despite the late spring air outside. Kai moved with a predator’s grace, his eyes scanning the cavernous space, his hand never far from the worn leather holster at his hip. He’d said they needed to meet *here*, of all places, a place so thoroughly erased from any digital map it might as well have been a ghost itself.
"Why here, Kai?" Elara’s voice was a small thing against the vast emptiness. She traced the outline of a peeling stencil on the grimy concrete wall, a faded symbol that looked disturbingly familiar, like a half-remembered dream. "Couldn't we have met somewhere… less… post-apocalyptic?"
Kai let out a low, humorless chuckle. "Because anywhere else, they’d have us before we even sat down. This place is off the grid, Elara. Completely. No cameras, no sensors, no digital footprint for miles. If they’re watching, they’re watching with their eyes, and that’s a disadvantage they’re not used to." He gestured for her to follow him deeper into the gloom, towards a single, bare bulb casting a weak, flickering circle of light.
