The flickering neon sign of the diner cast a sickly green glow onto the rain-slicked street, painting distorted reflections that danced like phantoms. Inside, the air hung thick with the aroma of stale coffee and fried onions, a stark contrast to the sterile hum of Elara’s usual existence. She nursed a lukewarm mug, her gaze fixed on the condensation streaking down the glass, each droplet a tiny, distorted world mirroring the chaos that had become her life.
Across the booth, Kai stirred his coffee, the spoon clinking a restless rhythm against the ceramic. His eyes, sharp and assessing, scanned the sparse late-night crowd – a weary trucker slumped in a corner, a couple whispering secrets in a booth further back, the bored waitress wiping down the counter. He moved with a coiled tension, a predator at rest, his gaze never lingering too long, yet missing nothing.
“Still nothing?” he finally asked, his voice a low rumble that barely cut through the diner’s ambient noise.
