But lately, that world felt like a fragile veneer, and beneath it, something vast and unsettling stirred. The static wasn’t just noise anymore; it was a language, a torrent of fragmented thoughts and images that snagged at the edges of her consciousness. Today, it was louder, more insistent, like a swarm of digital gnats buzzing at the edge of her vision.
She sat at her desk, the sterile glow of her monitors bathing her face in an otherworldly light. Her fingers danced across the keyboard, but her mind was elsewhere, adrift in the echoing corridors of her own fractured past. The recurring dream, the one with the crashing waves and the woman’s voice, a melody just out of reach, had been particularly vivid last night. She’d woken with a gasp, the taste of salt and ozone lingering on her tongue.
Then, it happened. A flicker, a ripple across the data stream scrolling down her main monitor. It wasn’t a glitch, not a standard error. This was… deliberate. A sequence of characters, alien and yet strangely familiar, bloomed for a fraction of a second before dissolving back into the white noise. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She’d seen it before, fleeting glimpses, like catching a reflection in a darkened window.
