The Dragon's Shadow

The air grew thick and heavy with the scent of sulfur and something ancient, something that prickled the hairs on the back of my neck. We’d been climbing for days, the jagged peaks of the Dragon’s Teeth mountains a constant, unforgiving presence against the bruised twilight sky. Each step was a labor, the loose scree threatening to send us tumbling back into the valleys we’d so painstakingly ascended. Sir Kaelan, his armor gleaming dully in the fading light, led the way, his jaw set in grim determination. Behind him, Elara, the nimble rogue, moved with a fluid grace that belied the treacherous terrain, her hand never far from the daggers sheathed at her hips. Torvin, the grizzled warrior, grumbled about the lack of ale and the questionable company, but his axe was always ready. And then there was Claire, her bright eyes scanning everything, her small pack filled with herbs and poultices, a beacon of calm in our increasingly tense group.

And me. Carlos. Just a stable boy, whose only real skill was coaxing a stubborn mule or mucking out stalls. Yet, here I was, a part of this desperate quest to retrieve Princess Aurelia from the clutches of a creature of myth. Every ache in my muscles, every sting of grit in my eyes, was a small price to pay for the chance, however slim, of seeing her again. I imagined her, her laughter like wind chimes, her eyes the color of a summer sky, trapped in some dark, fiery cavern. The thought spurred me onward, even as my boots slipped and my lungs burned.

We finally crested the last ridge, and there it was. The Dragon’s Maw. A gaping cavern carved into the side of the tallest peak, its entrance wreathed in wisps of acrid smoke that curled like spectral fingers. The ground beneath us vibrated with a low thrum, a sound that seemed to originate from the very heart of the mountain. It was the dragon’s breath, I was sure of it. A guttural, rhythmic pulse that spoke of immense power slumbering within.
