Beneath the Sparkle

The ballroom pulsed, a living entity of light and sound. Chandeliers dripped with a thousand tiny diamonds, scattering rainbows across the polished floor where couples twirled like discarded toys. Silk rustled, laughter chimed, and the air itself hummed with an intoxicating energy I’d only ever found between the pages of my most treasured books. My dress, a deep emerald green that clung like a second skin, felt impossibly right, a stark contrast to the faded denim and worn-out sweaters that usually comprised my wardrobe. It was a costume, yes, but a glorious one, and for the first time, I felt like the heroine of my own story.

Silas appeared at my elbow as if summoned by my thoughts, a shadow cast by the dazzling lights. His suit was as sharp as a perfectly folded page, his smile a practiced curve that didn't quite reach his eyes. “Enchanting, isn’t it?” His voice was a low murmur, a silken thread woven into the symphony of the night.

I nodded, unable to articulate the sheer overwhelmingness of it all. “It’s… more than I imagined.”
