The air that greeted me was thick with a perfume I’d only ever encountered in the pages of my most treasured novels – a heady blend of jasmine and something sharp, like crushed emeralds. My borrowed gown, a cascade of midnight blue silk that whispered secrets with every movement, felt like a second skin, a far cry from the drab cotton of my everyday life. The ballroom, if one could even call it that, was a fever dream rendered in crystal and gold. Chandeliers dripped light like frozen tears, illuminating a swirling kaleidoscope of faces, each more impossibly beautiful and impossibly strange than the last. I clutched the small, beaded clutch Silas had provided, its weight a comforting anchor in the dizzying expanse.

He appeared as if summoned by my thoughts, a silhouette emerging from the throng. His smile, a slow, predatory unfolding, sent a familiar shiver down my spine, a mixture of thrill and unease. “Elara,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the polished floor. “You look… magnificent.”

I managed a tremulous smile. “Thank you, Silas. This is… more than I ever imagined.”
