The Price of Peace
The scent of damp earth and decaying leaves clung to Elara, a familiar perfume of the woods that usually soothed her. Tonight, however, it felt heavy, almost suffocating. She clutched the small, velvet pouch containing the Night Bloom petals, its weight a comforting anchor against the rising tide of anxiety. The moon, a sliver of bone against the bruised velvet of the sky, offered little illumination, just enough to cast long, skeletal shadows that danced with every rustle of the undergrowth.
She’d chosen this path, the one leading away from the village, away from the watchful eyes and the whispered pity. The journey to the Whispering Falls had been arduous, a trek deeper into the heart of the ancient forest than she’d dared venture before. Each snap of a twig, each hoot of an owl, sent a tremor through her, a primal fear that had been her constant companion for as long as she could remember. But the promise of true rest, of a night free from the gnawing emptiness of wakefulness, had propelled her forward.
The falls, when she finally reached them, were more a murmur than a roar, a gentle cascade of water over moss-covered rocks, its sound a lullaby in the stillness. She knelt by the water’s edge, the cool spray misting her face. Her reflection stared back, a pale, gaunt stranger with eyes too large and too dark, haunted by the perpetual exhaustion that had become her defining feature. How long had it been since she’d truly slept? Weeks? Months? Time had blurred into a shapeless expanse of sleepless nights and weary days.
