The air in the small, cluttered apothecary hung thick with the scent of dried herbs and something vaguely metallic, like old pennies. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom from a high, grimy window. Elara traced the intricate patterns on the worn wooden counter, her fingers catching on a deep groove. It felt like a scar, a testament to years of use, of secrets whispered and remedies dispensed. She’d been here countless times, seeking solace for her restless nights, but today felt different. Today, she was not just a customer; she was a supplicant.
Old Man Hemlock, his face a roadmap of wrinkles and his eyes the color of faded ink, shuffled from behind a towering shelf laden with glass jars. He moved with a slow, deliberate grace, like a willow bending in the wind. He carried a small, dark wooden box, its surface smooth with age. “You’ve come for it, then,” he rasped, his voice like dry leaves skittering across pavement.
Elara nodded, her throat tight. “You said… you said you had it. The Lunaluna.” The name felt strange on her tongue, a secret whispered in a dream.
