The air in the hidden grove was thick and sweet, a perfume of damp earth and something else, something wild and ancient. Elara, her heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against her ribs, stepped further into the clearing. Moonlight, spilled like silver ink, painted the mossy stones and the gnarled roots of trees that seemed to twist like sleeping giants. It was here, the Keeper of Whispers had told her, that she would find the Bloom’s Guardian.
A rustle in the undergrowth made her jump. She held her breath, her eyes wide, scanning the shadowed spaces between the trees. The silence that followed was more unnerving than any sound, a heavy blanket woven with the anticipation of discovery. Then, a figure emerged from the deep shadows, not with a startling stride, but with a slow, deliberate grace that spoke of belonging.
She was a woman, though her age was impossible to guess. Her hair, the colour of twilight, cascaded down her back, woven with strands of moonlight and what looked like tiny, shimmering seeds. Her eyes, the colour of deep forest pools, held a wisdom that seemed to stretch back through centuries. She wore a gown of woven leaves and bark, a living tapestry that shifted and whispered with her movements.
