Awakening to Shadows
The morning light, usually a gentle caress on Elara’s eyelids, felt like a harsh spotlight. She blinked, the familiar ache of a night spent staring at the ceiling replaced by a peculiar, lingering fuzziness. It wasn't the exhaustion she knew, the bone-deep weariness that clung to her like damp clothes. This was… different. A soft echo of the night’s journey, like the faint scent of a flower that had long since wilted.
She sat up, the sheets cool against her skin. The room was exactly as she’d left it, a comforting jumble of books and art supplies bathed in the morning sun. But something felt off. A subtle shift in the air, a whisper of unease that tickled the back of her mind. Last night’s dream, or whatever it had been, had been vivid. Too vivid. The swirling colours, the disembodied voices, the chilling sensation of being watched… it all felt more real than waking.
Elara swung her legs out of bed, her feet finding the worn rug. She padded over to the window, pulling back the curtains. The world outside was a vibrant tapestry of green and blue, the chirping of birds a cheerful symphony. Yet, even this familiar scene seemed tinged with a new layer of awareness. She noticed the intricate patterns of the leaves on the oak tree outside her window, the way the sunlight dappled through its branches, creating dancing shadows on the lawn. It was as if her senses had been sharpened, her perception heightened.
