The Architect of Nightmares

Elara’s eyes snapped open, but the darkness was a thick, suffocating blanket, far deeper than the usual velvety cloak of night. This was a different kind of dark, one that pressed in on her, stealing her breath and her courage. The familiar comfort of her bedroom had dissolved, replaced by the unsettling stillness of… somewhere else. She pushed herself up, her limbs heavy as if weighted with lead. The air was cool, carrying a faint, metallic scent, like rain on cold stone, and something else, something sweet and cloying, like overripe fruit.

She was standing on a path, not of cobblestones or dirt, but of shimmering, inky blackness that seemed to absorb the very light that wasn’t there. Strange, twisted trees with leaves like tattered lace lined the path, their branches reaching out like skeletal fingers. The silence was profound, broken only by the frantic thumping of her own heart against her ribs. She was alone. Utterly, terrifyingly alone.

“Hello?” Her voice was a thin thread, swallowed by the vast emptiness. No answer.
