The whispers had been a constant hum, a low thrum of gossip and judgment that followed me like a shadow. They were the hushed conversations in the market, the sidelong glances from strangers, the pointed silences when I entered a room. They spoke of my difference, of my perceived misfortune, of the ways I didn't fit the mold. For so long, those whispers were the loudest voices in my life, shaping my world with their negativity. But something was shifting. The hum was changing its tune.

It started subtly, like the first hint of dawn after a long night. A shopkeeper, who once averted his gaze, now offered a hesitant smile as I passed. A neighbor, who had always hurried her children away from me, found herself nodding a polite greeting. These were small things, almost imperceptible, but they were cracks in the wall of prejudice that had surrounded me.

My mother, of course, saw it all. Her eyes, which had held so much worry and fierce protectiveness, now sparkled with a different kind of light. "Do you see, my son?" she'd say, her voice soft but brimming with triumph. "The world is starting to open its eyes."
