The afternoon sun, a molten gold poured over the terracotta rooftops of Rome, found Elara in Marco’s studio. Dust motes danced in the slanted beams, illuminating canvases stacked against the walls like sleeping giants. The air was thick with the scent of turpentine and something else, something earthy and alive, the scent of creation. Marco, his brow furrowed in concentration, stood before an easel, his brush a blur against the linen. He was painting a scene of the Forum, vibrant and alive, the ruins breathing with a forgotten grandeur.

Elara watched him, her breath catching in her throat. His hands, strong and calloused, moved with a surety that both fascinated and unnerved her. Each stroke of his brush was a deliberate act, a shaping of raw pigment into something beautiful, something that spoke of this world, of its triumphs and its tragedies. She traced the curve of his jaw with her eyes, the way his dark hair fell across his forehead. He was so wholly present in this moment, so absorbed in the act of bringing beauty into being.

A tremor ran through her, a familiar dissonance. Here, amidst the intoxicating scent of oil paint and the magnetic pull of Marco’s presence, her prayers felt distant, like faint bells heard across a vast plain. She clutched the smooth stone in her pocket, its familiar coolness a small anchor in the swirling currents of her emotions.
