The air in Marco’s studio, usually alive with the scent of turpentine and linseed oil, felt thick with unspoken words. Dust motes danced in the shafts of sunlight that slanted through the tall, arched windows, illuminating the canvases stacked against the walls like sleeping giants. Elara traced the rough weave of her skirt, her gaze fixed on a half-finished portrait of a woman whose eyes seemed to hold a similar, shadowed depth to her own. Marco had been unusually quiet since their last encounter, his usual easy banter replaced by a thoughtful silence that mirrored the one blooming within Elara’s own heart.
He was cleaning his brushes, the rhythmic swish of bristles against the ceramic jar a soft counterpoint to the distant hum of Roman life. He paused, then turned to her, his brow furrowed with a gentle concern that always caught her off guard.
“You seem far away, Elara,” he said, his voice a low murmur that seemed to weave itself into the very fabric of the studio. “As if you are listening to a conversation only you can hear.”
