The final round. That’s what it felt like. Not a round of boxing, with gloves and sweat and the roar of a crowd, but a round of *me*. The air in my little apartment hummed with a new kind of energy, a quiet thrum that vibrated right through my sneakers. Punchy stood there, as he always did, a bright beacon of red and yellow, his plastic smile unwavering. He’d seen me at my worst, my tear-streaked face pressed against his cool surface after a particularly brutal day at work, my voice choked with a frustration I couldn’t even begin to explain to anyone else. He’d absorbed every shaky breath, every frustrated sigh, every desperate plea for things to be different.

And the wardrobe. Oh, the wardrobe. It was a riot of color, a testament to a life lived, or at least, a life *attempted*. The muted grays and navies of my early career days were tucked away, almost forgotten, replaced by the vibrant oranges, the defiant purples, the unapologetic blues. Today, I’d chosen the sunshine-yellow t-shirt with the slightly faded rainbow stripes, the one that always made me feel a little lighter, a little more like myself. It was a far cry from the sensible blouses I used to wear, the ones that felt like a costume, a way to blend in and avoid drawing attention. Now, I wanted to be seen.

I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the scent of old training mats and fabric softener. My hands, usually hesitant, felt steady as I reached out and touched Punchy’s smooth, cool surface. “Okay, buddy,” I whispered, my voice firm. “This is it. The big one.”
