The rough-hewn stone of Elara’s dwelling offered little comfort against the chill that seemed to seep from the very heart of Dragonland. Arthur sat on a low stool, his gaze fixed on the elder’s weathered hands as they traced patterns in the dust motes dancing in the single shaft of sunlight piercing the gloom. He had expected lessons of fire and frost, of lightning and earth, but Elara had spoken of something far heavier: the weight of history.

“Dragonland was not always a land of fear, Arthur,” Elara began, her voice a low rumble, like distant thunder. She paused, gathering her thoughts, her ancient eyes, the color of a storm-tossed sea, fixed on a point beyond the walls, beyond the very mountains that clawed at the sky. “Once, it was a tapestry of vibrant life, woven with the magic of the elements, shared by all creatures. The dragons, in those days, were guardians, not masters.”

Arthur shifted, the rough fabric of his borrowed tunic scratching his skin. He had seen the terror in the eyes of the villagers, the way they scurried like frightened mice when the shadow of a dragon passed overhead. This elder’s words painted a picture so starkly different, it was hard to reconcile. “What happened?” he asked, his voice barely a whisper.
