The air in Dragonland was thick with a scent Arthur couldn't quite place – a heady mix of ozone, damp earth, and something sharp, like burnt sugar. It clung to his clothes, his skin, even the back of his throat. He’d stumbled through the shimmering veil behind the old oak in his backyard expecting… well, he wasn’t sure what he’d expected. Certainly not this. Not this vast, alien landscape stretching out before him, bathed in the perpetual twilight of a sky that seemed perpetually bruised with shades of purple and deep indigo.

His first few hours had been a blur of panicked stumbling and wide-eyed disbelief. The portal, that impossible doorway, had snapped shut behind him with a sound like tearing silk, leaving him utterly, irrevocably stranded. Now, the initial shock had begun to recede, replaced by a gnawing unease. He was alone, lost, and the whispers of his own power, a strange tingling beneath his skin, were beginning to manifest in ways he couldn't comprehend.

He’d been trying to find water, his throat feeling as parched as the cracked earth beneath his worn sneakers. He’d spotted a glint of silver in the distance, a ribbon of water snaking through the strange, gnarled trees. Hope had surged, a welcome counterpoint to the dread that had been his constant companion. He’d picked up his pace, his clumsy feet tripping over roots that seemed to writhe like living things.
