The cobblestones of Montmartre were a fickle beast, each one a small, grey promise of adventure that sometimes led to a dead end, a tourist trap, or a sudden, dizzying drop in altitude. Today, they were leading me nowhere in particular, and that, I decided, was precisely the point. My phone, usually a frantic hummingbird in my palm, was tucked deep into my satchel, a conscious act of rebellion against the constant ping of notifications, the endless scroll of curated lives that had started to feel more like a digital prison than a gateway to connection.

Paris, the city I’d envisioned as a grand, gilded stage for my burgeoning artistry, had thus far been a series of fleeting glimpses and hollow echoes. The Eiffel Tower, my initial beacon of awe and intimidation, now felt like a monument to my own insignificance, a towering testament to the fact that I was just another speck of dust trying to find my footing in a city that had seen millennia of dreams rise and fall. It was a wild, bohemian heart, a labyrinth of winding streets, hidden squares, and artists who seemed to have stepped right out of a forgotten postcard. The air here was thick with the scent of roasting chestnuts, cheap wine, and something less definable, something wild and untamed that snagged at my soul.
