The clatter of the espresso cup against the saucer was a sharp, decisive sound, unlike the muted anxieties that usually buzzed in my head. Chloe’s hand, steady and firm, pushed the cup closer to me. “Here,” she said, her voice laced with a familiar blend of exasperation and affection. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

I managed a weak smile, the ghost, of course, being the lingering specter of my former self, the one who lived behind the glow of a thousand screens.
