The ink on the scrap of paper, faded but stubbornly present, felt like a brand against my fingertips. Elara’s symbol, the stylized nightingale, was unmistakable. It was a ghost’s signature, scrawled in haste, a desperate whisper from the grave. I’d spent the better part of the day hunched over my scarred wooden desk, the scent of stale tobacco and cheap ink thick in the air of my cramped apartment, piecing together the fragments of her message. Each deciphered letter was a small victory, a flicker of light pushing back the encroaching darkness. But with each revelation, a chill, colder than the Vilnius autumn, snaked down my spine.
“*Statistinis nukrito nuo stalo*.” The words, when finally assembled, were nonsensical. A statistical anomaly falling off a table? It was maddeningly abstract, a cryptic taunt. Elara, bless her brilliant, infuriating mind, had always favored the oblique. But this felt different. This felt like a final, desperate plea, a trail of breadcrumbs leading into a forest of shadows.
I ran a hand through my hair, the usually unruly chestnut strands feeling tangled with frustration. The NKVD’s long reach was a constant, suffocating presence in this city. Even now, months after the war’s official end, their grip tightened, their agents a phantom menace, their pronouncements law. And Elara, my mentor, my confidante, the woman who had taught me the language of ciphers, was supposedly dead. Vanished. Her file, I’d heard, was marked ‘closed’. But this message, this impossible message, screamed otherwise.
