The air in Dmitri’s cramped apartment hung thick with the scent of stale tobacco and desperation. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of weak sunlight that dared to pierce the grimy window, illuminating a tableau of controlled chaos. Papers were strewn across a scarred wooden table, a half-eaten bowl of something unidentifiable sat beside a chipped porcelain cup, and the general impression was that of a man who lived on the razor’s edge of his own making. I watched him from the doorway, my hand still resting on the cool metal of the doorknob, a silent sentinel.
“You’re late, Anya,” Dmitri said, his voice a low rasp, not bothering to look up from the ledger he was meticulously poring over. His fingers, stained with ink and something that looked suspiciously like dried blood, moved with a practiced, almost predatory grace. He was a creature of the shadows, thriving in the liminal spaces where legality and illegality blurred into a single, murky hue.
“And you’re still counting your ill-gotten gains, Dmitri?” I countered, stepping fully into the room. My boots, scuffed but immaculately polished, made a soft click on the bare floorboards. I’d chosen my outfit carefully – a tailored wool coat in a deep forest green, a splash of crimson silk peeking from the collar, and a pair of sturdy, yet elegant, leather gloves. Practical, yes, but with a flair that always managed to unnerve men like him.
