Chapter 5
The Odds Turn Sour
The usual cheerful clinking of coins had grown quieter in Oakhaven. A hush had fallen over the town, a subtle shift in the air that even Penny, the little piggy bank with the big secret, could feel. It wasn't a fear that gripped them, not yet, but a gnawing uncertainty. Mayor Mildred, her usually rosy cheeks a shade paler, had been the first to notice. Penny felt it too. The joyous hum that usually vibrated through its ceramic body when a wish was deposited was now a faint, discordant buzz. The vibrant lights that danced behind its slot were dim, flickering like dying embers. It was trying, oh, how it was trying. It strained to summon the magic, to weave the threads of desire into the tapestry of reality. But something was interfering, a heavy, suffocating presence that seemed to smother the very essence of hope.
