Lihau, her loyal advisor, moved with a quiet urgency that mirrored the Queen’s own internal turmoil. Her brow was often furrowed, her dark eyes reflecting the sleepless nights spent poring over documents filled with incomprehensible legalese and veiled threats. “Your Majesty,” Lihau began, her voice a low murmur as she entered the Queen’s private chambers, carrying a tray with a delicate porcelain cup of kava. “The American Minister has sent another communiqué. They… they are insistent about the Bayonet Constitution.”
Lili'uokalani sighed, the sound barely audible above the rustle of her silk holoku. She accepted the kava, its earthy aroma a small comfort in the sterile elegance of the room. “Insistent,” she echoed, her voice tinged with weariness. “As if it were a mere suggestion, not a document forced upon my predecessor at gunpoint.” The Bayonet Constitution, a document that stripped much of the monarchy’s power and disenfranchised thousands of Hawaiian citizens, was a constant thorn in her side, a testament to the growing assertion of foreign influence.
