The script was angular, precise, utterly alien. “They speak of ‘progress,’ of ‘modernization.’ They speak of ‘investment’ that will ‘benefit all.’” Her gaze drifted to the open window, where the vibrant green of the palace gardens met the endless blue of the Pacific. “But I sense a different current beneath their smooth words.”
