Elara, her hands still dusted with the grime of disturbed soil, turned, a flicker of surprise igniting in her gaze. Standing on the threshold, silhouetted against the hazy afternoon light, was a man. He was not a specter, not a figment of the glasshouse’s humid magic, but a solid presence, his frame lean, his movements unhurried. He carried himself with a quiet dignity, like a tree that had weathered many seasons.
He stepped inside, the gate sighing shut behind him, and his eyes, a clear, intelligent grey, swept over the verdant chaos. There was no intrusion in his gaze, only a profound, almost reverent, recognition. "Miss Vance," he said, his voice a low rumble, like the turning of ancient earth. "I am Silas Blackwood. I believe your grandmother, Beatrice, mentioned me. Or perhaps she didn't. She was fond of her silences."
Elara’s heart gave a peculiar lurch. Beatrice. The name, spoken by this stranger, felt both familiar and alien, like a melody half-remembered. She nodded, finding her voice, a little thinner than she’d intended. "Yes. She… she did. I didn't expect anyone."
