The old town of Oakhaven seemed to hold its breath, a sleepy place where the most exciting event of the week was the arrival of the morning paper. Elara, however, carried a different kind of excitement, one that buzzed beneath her skin like a trapped bee. She’d spent days poring over Eleanor’s journals, piecing together a life lived in vibrant, secret hues, a life so unlike the hushed whispers of her estranged grandmother that Elara had always imagined. The journals spoke of Oakhaven, of its people, of small kindnesses and forgotten lore. It was time, Elara decided, to step out from the overgrown embrace of the estate and into the heart of the town.

She chose the Saturday market, a bustling tapestry of canvas stalls and chattering voices. The air was thick with the scent of fresh bread, ripe berries, and something else, something earthy and familiar that tugged at her memory – the scent of the glasshouse. Clutching a worn leather-bound book filled with Eleanor’s elegant script and pressed flowers, Elara felt a tremor of nerves. This was a different kind of adventure, one that involved words and people, not just silent, verdant growth.

Her first stop was Mrs. Gable’s stall, piled high with jars of glistening preserves and fragrant soaps. Mrs. Gable, a woman whose smile crinkled the corners of her eyes, had been a friend of Eleanor’s, Elara recalled from a faded photograph.
