Chapter 9
The Return and the Remedy
Joy Joel carefully picks the magical flower and rushes back to his village. He immediately brews a soothing tea from its petals. Rose and the other sick children drink it, and their smiles slowly return.
Joy Joel’s heart pounded a rhythm against his ribs, a drumbeat of urgency and hope as his fingers, gentle as a butterfly’s wing, closed around the stem of the Glimmering Bloom. The petals, soft as a whispered secret, unfurled in his palm, radiating a warmth that chased away the last vestiges of the chill that had clung to him since he’d entered this hidden grove. He cradled the flower as if it were the most precious jewel in the world, which, to him, it was. It was Rose’s laughter, it was the return of the children’s playful shouts, it was the peace that would settle back over his beloved village.
With the Glimmering Bloom safely tucked into a pouch he’d fashioned from soft moss, Joy Joel turned back. The path that had seemed so daunting on his way in now felt familiar, almost welcoming. He moved with a swiftness born of love and desperation, his feet barely seeming to touch the ground. The forest, which had held its breath around him before, now seemed to sigh with approval, the leaves rustling like hushed encouragement. He passed the wise old owl who hooted a soft farewell, and waved to the playful sprites who danced in his wake, their tiny bells tinkling a song of good fortune.
As the edge of the forest drew near, the familiar scent of woodsmoke and damp earth filled his lungs, a comforting aroma that made his chest ache with longing. He broke into a run, the pouch containing the flower bouncing gently against his side. The village came into view, not with the vibrant colors he remembered, but muted, subdued. A quiet sorrow hung in the air, thicker than the morning mist. He saw the worried faces of the adults, their movements slow and heavy, and his resolve hardened. He would not let this sadness linger.
