Chapter 12
Anja's Stand
Witnessing the lengths Blackwood will go to, Anja decides to fully commit to helping Evelyn, providing crucial access and information that Blackwood could not anticipate or control.
The air in the restricted section of the archive always felt thinner, cooler, as if the very act of containing so much forgotten knowledge leached the warmth from the world. Anja had agreed, her usual meticulous checks and balances momentarily bypassed by Evelyn’s palpable urgency. But as the hours ticked by, Evelyn knew Anja would be watching. Not just the security cameras, but the subtle shifts in the archive’s rhythm, the hushed footsteps, the phantom presence that always seemed to linger in the periphery of Blackwood’s machinations.
