Elara traced the intricate carving on the silver locket. It was her grandmother’s, a delicate filigree of swirling vines and tiny, almost hidden, initials. She’d lost it years ago, a pang of sadness still echoing whenever she thought of it. Now, it rested in her palm, cool and solid, a tangible piece of her past brought back through the humming portal behind her Murphy bed. A small smile, tentative at first, bloomed on her lips. She’d seen her grandmother’s younger self, vibrant and full of life, through the portal just yesterday. A fleeting glimpse of a sun-drenched garden, a younger version of the woman she knew, laughing as she chased butterflies. Elara, with trembling hands, had carefully placed the locket on a low stone bench, a silent offering, a desperate hope. And now, here it was.
