Noah's Arrival
Noah, an acquaintance with a cynical air, arrives unannounced. He claims to be checking on them, but his aloof demeanor and strange comments about the house suggest hidden motives. His presence adds another layer of tension.
The air in the old house had a weight to it, a palpable stillness that pressed in on Liam’s chest. It had been there since they arrived, a silent observer to their uneasy tenancy. He’d tried to shake it, to fill the echoing rooms with laughter and the clatter of dishes, but the house seemed to absorb every attempt, returning only a hollow resonance. Maya, swallowed by her research, was a constant, flickering presence in the dusty study, her fingers tracing the brittle pages of forgotten texts. Chloe, bless her skittish heart, jumped at every creak, her eyes wide and perpetually scanning the shadows. And Liam, he just tried to keep his head above the rising tide of unease, to be the anchor in their increasingly turbulent sea.
Then, the crunch of tires on the gravel drive shattered the fragile calm. It was too late for casual visitors, too late for the cheerful delivery of supplies. Liam’s gut clenched. He’d already spoken to Maya and Chloe; no one was expecting anyone. He walked to the front door, his hand hovering over the tarnished brass knob, a cold knot of dread tightening in his stomach. The car, a nondescript sedan, was already idling, its engine a low growl against the oppressive silence. The driver’s side door opened, and a figure emerged, silhouetted against the fading light.
