The air in the cavern hung heavy with the scent of damp earth and something else, something ancient and humming like a plucked lyre string. Kael’s face, usually a mask of calm wisdom, was etched with a weariness that went deeper than mere fatigue. He turned from the glowing tapestry, his gaze settling on me, and for the first time, I saw not just a stranger who had appeared at the most desperate moment, but a man bound by a duty as old as the mountains themselves.
“You asked who I was, Elara,” he began, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very stone beneath our feet. “Not just a traveler, not just a guide. I am a guardian.”
My breath hitched. Guardian. The word conjured images of stoic sentinels, of unyielding protectors. But Kael… he was more than that. He was the keeper of secrets, the whisperer of forgotten lore.
