The air thrummed with an unnatural stillness, a silence that pressed in on my ears, more deafening than any roar. Kael’s hand, cool and surprisingly firm, gripped my arm. “They know,” he breathed, his voice a low rumble against the oppressive quiet. “The Obsidian Hand. They’ve anticipated our path.”

My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. We stood at the edge of a narrow gorge, the crumbling remains of an ancient bridge arching precariously over the dizzying drop below. It was the only way forward, the only path that led, according to Kael’s whispered directions, towards the hidden sanctuary. But now, the very stones of the bridge seemed to sweat with a dark anticipation.

“How?” I managed to ask, my voice a reedy whisper. I scanned the rocky outcrops that lined the gorge, searching for any sign of movement, any flicker of threat. Nothing. Yet, the feeling of being watched, of being hunted, was a tangible weight on my shoulders.
