The scent of damp earth and something akin to forgotten perfume clung to Elara as she stepped onto the porch. It was a scent that had become familiar, the soul of the estate seeping into her very being. She’d spent days lost in the labyrinthine corridors of the house, each room a pause in time, filled with the ghosts of her grandmother’s presence. But it was the glasshouse that held her captive, its humid embrace a constant siren song. Today, however, a different melody beckoned, one that drifted from the overgrown rose garden where a figure stood, silhouetted against the hazy afternoon sun.

He turned as she approached, a gentle smile gracing his lips, the kind that didn’t demand attention but invited it. His eyes, the colour of moss after rain, met hers with an easy warmth. “Miss Vance?” he asked, his voice a low rumble, like stones smoothed by a river. “I’m Silas. I knew your grandmother, Eleanor.”

Elara’s breath hitched. Silas. The name had appeared in a faded diary entry, a fleeting mention of shared laughter and quiet conversations. “You knew her?” The question felt inadequate, a pebble dropped into an ocean of untold stories.
