Chapter 6
The Gardener's Heart
Elara finds a way to heal the wilting plants, realizing her own latent abilities are awakening. Her empathy and care become the key to restoring the glasshouse's vitality.
The air in the glasshouse hung heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and a sorrow that Elara felt deep in her bones. The storm had raged, a tempest of wind and water that had clawed at the brittle panes, and now, in its wake, a profound silence had fallen. But it was a silence of defeat, not peace. The vibrant, chattering blooms of yesterday were today a tableau of wilting despair. Petals drooped like weary heads, their once luminous colours muted, their whispers silenced. A chilling dread, colder than the rain-soaked air, seeped into Elara. She had failed. The sanctuary her grandmother had poured her life into, the very heart of this forgotten estate, was dying under her care.
She knelt, her fingers tracing the velvety, now limp, surface of a Moonpetal. Its silver sheen was dulled, its edges curling inwards as if in pain. A sob caught in her throat. She had tried everything she could think of – adjusting the humidity, offering water, even speaking to them, her voice a hesitant croak against the vast emptiness. But they hadn't responded. They were fading, taking with them the echoes of Eleanor's fierce love, the secrets that clung to their very roots.
Then, from the depths of the glasshouse, a faint sound reached her ears. It was barely a breath, a sigh of wind through dry leaves, but it was there. A whisper. Elara’s head snapped up, her heart leaping. She scrambled to her feet, her gaze sweeping the shadowed corners. The whispers grew, a chorus of faint, reedy voices, weaving a tapestry of sound that was both mournful and beckoning. They seemed to emanate from the very soil, from the tangled vines, from the dew-kissed leaves.
