The air in the glasshouse was thick with the scent of a thousand forgotten summers, a perfume of damp earth and something else, something wild and sweet that made Elara’s breath catch. Sunlight, fractured through the grimy panes, painted shifting mosaics on the moss-velvet floor. Her grandmother’s journals, brittle with age and filled with a spindly, elegant script, lay open on a chipped stone bench. Each page was a portal, not just to a garden, but to a life Elara had never known.

“My dearest Blooms,” one entry began, the ink slightly feathered as if written in haste, or perhaps with a trembling hand. “You are the whispers of the earth made manifest, the secrets I could not speak aloud. Your colours are stolen from dawn and twilight, your fragrances woven from starlight and the sighs of lovers.” Elara traced the words, a strange ache blooming in her chest. This was not the stern, distant woman her parents had described, but a soul alive with a fierce, almost desperate, love for these strange, luminous plants.

The journals spoke of Eleanor’s early days, of her arrival at the estate, a young woman brimming with a wild, untamed spirit, much like Elara herself now felt. She wrote of the first seed, a tiny, iridescent speck gifted by a traveling botanist, a seed that held within it the promise of the impossible. The book detailed painstaking efforts, whispered incantations that Elara now recognized as a form of coaxing, of understanding the silent language of roots and petals. Each entry was a testament to Eleanor’s unwavering dedication, her battles against blight and frost, her quiet triumphs celebrated with a joy that spilled onto the page.
