The air in Oakhaven was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something wild and untamed that Elara couldn't quite place. It clung to her like the morning mist, a constant reminder of the legacy she’d stumbled into. For weeks, she’d been wrestling with the sheer, overwhelming presence of Vance Manor, a sprawling, melancholic monument to a grandmother she barely knew. But it was the glasshouse, that forgotten, overgrown jewel box, that held her captive. Its humid breath, a symphony of decaying leaves and burgeoning life, pulsed with a rhythm that resonated deep within her.
One drizzly afternoon, while wrestling with a particularly stubborn patch of ivy that threatened to consume an entire section of the glasshouse wall, she heard a voice, raspy and warm, like sun-baked stone.
"That particular specimen has a stubborn streak, much like its former keeper."
