The Placeholder of Faith

The dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the heavy velvet curtains, each tiny particle a universe unto itself, governed by unseen forces. Kristijana watched them, her gaze unfocused, her mind adrift in a sea of unanswered questions. Her spiritual compass, once a steady lodestar pointing towards an unwavering belief, now spun wildly, its needle quivering with indecision. Faith, a concept she had always understood as a geometric certainty, a foundation upon which to build a life, had become as elusive as the solutions to her deepest emotional quandaries. She’d always found solace in the predictable curves of a parabola, the unwavering straightness of a line.
