Chapter 12
Reframing the Angles
Her rigid perspectives begin to soften. Kristijana learns that not all problems have a single, perfect solution, and that embracing imperfection can lead to unexpected beauty.
Kristijana traced the dust motes dancing in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the heavy velvet curtains. They moved with a chaotic, yet somehow elegant, abandon that her mind, so accustomed to the ordered lines of Euclidean geometry, struggled to categorize. For so long, her world had been defined by the sharp, predictable angles of theorems and proofs. A right angle was always ninety degrees, a parallel line would never meet, and the sum of angles in a triangle was an immutable truth. Yet, these tiny specks of dust, adrift in the air, defied such simple definitions. They swirled and coalesced, dispersed and reappeared, following a logic entirely their own, a logic that felt less like a proof and more like a sigh.
She had always found solace in the predictability of mathematics. It was a language that spoke of order and certainty in a world that often felt alarmingly capricious. Grief, in particular, had been a most unwelcome variable, an irrational number that refused to be simplified, a chaotic force that disrupted the elegant equations of her life. The house itself, a repository of her past, bore witness to this internal struggle. Books on differential equations lay beside worn volumes of poetry, drafting tools sat on surfaces dusted with the remnants of dried flowers, and the faint scent of old paper mingled with the lingering perfume of a life lived, and perhaps, lost.
The recurring dream, or perhaps a memory that had burrowed so deep it had taken root as a nocturnal phantom, had returned again last night. A stark, white room, a single wooden chair, and a silence that pressed in on her ears like a physical weight. She hadn’t seen the details, only felt the overwhelming sense of dread, the primal urge to flee, and then, a sharp, blinding flash, not of light, but of an emotional void. It was a puzzle with missing pieces, a theorem with an unproven lemma, and it gnawed at the edges of her carefully constructed reality.
