Honestly, if I had a dollar for every time I felt like my brain was a giant disco ball with way too many flashing lights, I’d be able to buy a silent retreat. Which, right now, sounded like pure, unadulterated bliss. Even Whiskers, Mr. Henderson’s perpetually unimpressed feline overlord, was radiating pure, unadulterated *grump*. It wasn’t just a general “leave me alone” vibe; it was a full-blown, laser-focused “you are interrupting my nap, and for that, you shall suffer” intensity. I could practically *taste* his disdain, a sour, slightly fishy flavor that clung to the air.
“He’s really not happy about the disappearing gnome, is he?” Leo asked, nudging me with his elbow. He was perched on the low wall bordering Mr. Henderson’s prize-winning petunias, his eyes glued to the black cat who was currently grooming himself with the furious concentration of a bomb disposal expert.
