Chapter 17
Elara's Empathy Evolution
The ordeal shifts Elara's perspective. Her 'burden' of sensory overload begins to feel more like a gift, a tool for understanding and connection.
My head used to feel like a crowded bus station at rush hour. Every thought, every emotion, every stray dog’s bark, every wilting daisy’s sigh – it all slammed into me, a relentless wave of *too much*. I’d curl up in my room, a blanket fortress against the onslaught, wishing my superpower would just, you know, take a permanent vacation. Maybe move to a remote island with no Wi-Fi and a strict “no feeling allowed” policy. But then Barty Buttercup, the grumpiest ghost I’d ever not-quite-seen, decided his biscuit recipe was more important than my sanity. He was holding his tablet, scrolling through some fantastical creature database, probably looking for a ghostly biscuit-eating dragon. “Like, ‘would-haunt-a-whole-town-for-eternity’ level love?”
I leaned back against the ancient oak tree in the town square, the rough bark a grounding texture against my fingertips. The usual cacophony of town life was still there – Mrs. Gable’s frantic worry about her prize-winning petunias, the sheer joy radiating from the ice cream truck, the low hum of a thousand tiny anxieties – but it felt different. Muted, somehow. Like I’d finally figured out how to use the volume knob. “More like ‘accidentally-threw-away-the-only-copy-of-my-great-great-aunt-Mildred’s-secret-recipe-and-now-I’m-utterly-bereft’ level love,” I corrected, a faint smile playing on my lips. The sheer absurdity of it all was starting to tickle me. A ghost, a spectral baker, throwing a tantrum because of a lost recipe? It was the kind of plotline Leo usually concocted for his games.
